There has been some bitching on FSP about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to speak at Columbia University. Considering that the president of the University, Lee Bollinger,  verbally bitch-slapped President Ahmadinejad into the previous century (5th century, but Iranian standards), I wonder how much the FSPers will be crying now.

University President Lee Bollinger said:

“Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator,” Bollinger said to applause from many of the 600 people in the room for a speech from the Iranian leader.

He cited the Iranian government’s “brutal crackdown” on dissidents, public executions, executions of minors and other actions.

And Bollinger assailed Ahmadinejad’s “denying” of the Holocaust as “ridiculous” and “dangerous propaganda.” He called the Iranian leader either brazenly provocative “or astonishingly uneducated.”

“The truth is that the Holocaust is the most documented event in human history,” he said.

He said he doubted Ahmadinejad would show the intellectual courage to answer the questions before him.

The better part of me thinks it’s good that the students at Columbia will get to hear this man speak. The meaner side thinks it’s uproariously funny that the university President had the nuts to swing first! I hereby invite President Ahmadinejad to Delaware where I will remove from his spine the +5 Dagger of Hilarious Backstabbing.

Kudos to Columbia University for the funniest turn in recent history!

PS I have more commentary on this as soon as I stop laughing…

HAHAHAhehehe… whoo… Sorry, but I keep getting the mental image of Bollinger continuing with, “Now, that being said, please put your haaands together…”

So, this is a perfect example of why I thought it was such a good thing that Columbia University provided this forum to President Ahmadinejad. Allowing him to speak in front of an inquisitive group of American students who can directly learn more about his views without the veil of the media. It’s not hard to appreciate what kind of unique experience is being provided to these students by the University when they can directly hear his responses to their questions.

However, the only point where the University failed quite miserably was not giving the opportunity of an open forum with the Iranian President. Instead of being able to ask questions, they were required to write down questions, some of which were selected to be asked during the forum. Let’s face it, Mr. Bollinger made quite sure this would never happen again, and I feel that the students were robbed of the opportunity rail Ahmadinejad themselves.

UPDATE: I’ve edited the title of this post because it was bothering the fuck out of me.

I still think it a huge mistake to invite the bastard, but Bollinger earned a lotta cred in my book w/his performance.

I’m still not understanding why. The students learned that this guy is a for real fruitcake, and any imagined honor that was divined from the invite was thoroughly destroyed by the intro that Bollinger gave him.

Sounds like a win-win to me.
